THE TAGUCHI LEGACY, A CELEBRATION OF JAPANESE HERITAGE THROUGH TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPHY | KIANA TAGUCHI BATES

Being a proud descendant of Japanese culture, Kiana Taguchi Bates’ exhibit is inspired by her grandma and grandpa.

“I grew up not speaking Japanese, but serving a mission in Japan deepened my appreciation for the Japanese language and culture. I fueled my deepening passion for photography by capturing my Baachan (grandmother). I fell in love with the intricacies of my Japanese heritage through her hands, her smile, her cooking and the stories she would tell me.”

Bates would love for viewers to develop a greater appreciation for Japanese culture. She also wants this project to spark an interest in viewers to learn more about their own heritage.

The artist said she’s come to love and appreciate the beautiful, archival nature of the tintype process. “I hope to pass these photos on to my children and that these photos will outlive me and be seen for generations to come has changed the way I approach not only my tintypes, but all of my work,” she said.
