WHAT SHOULD BE PRESENT | SADIE BINGHAM

Sadie Bingham’s exhibition, entitled “what should be present” is about bringing awareness to mental illness. In this show, mixed-media photographs are presented with various mundane shapes and objects. However, contained in each piece there is an aspect of distortion. This distortion tells a narrative of what it means to struggle with mental illness. For many individuals struggling with mental health-related issues, the concept of normal becomes distorted, causing a change in their personal perception of the surrounding world.

“For this series, I wanted to challenge societal stigmas and norms regarding mental health. For many who struggle with these issues, there is a constant barrier between their personal struggles and what society deems as acceptable for a “functioning” individual,” said Bingham.

Bingham said that the manipulation of photographs is not a common practice in traditional photography. “Generally speaking, photographs are handled with great care, while these collaged works contain smudges, glue, uneven edges, and tears. As an homage to this theme of mental illness coupled with perception, I wanted to handle these photographs in a rougher manner, in order to speak to themes of control and disorder,” she said.
