Art History Major Alyssa Isom Passes Away in Her Sleep

Our condolences go out to the family of the recent Alyssa Nicole Isom, former Art History and Curatorial Studies major at Brigham Young University. On September 23, 2012, Alyssa passed from the challenges of a weakened body to the next life. Despite the challenges of her health, Alyssa remained fervent in her faith and dedicated to achieving success in all aspects of life. During her time here at BYU Alyssa brought joy to those around her and accomplished much in her studies. For funeral information click here.

Chinese Education Administrators Join BYU for Two-Week Workshop

We are excited to announce that the Department of Dance and the School of Music at BYU will co-host educational administrators from all over China for a two-week arts leadership workshop. The workshop, entitled Exploring our Differences: The Nature of Education and Leadership in the Arts, will begin Monday, September 24. The Beijing Dance Academy will arrive on campus on Saturday, September 29 to participate and perform in the second week of the workshop.

Scotland's Puppet State Theatre presents “The Man Who Planted Trees” at BYU Sept. 27-28

CSU-Northridge faculty members to present guest recitals at BYU Sept. 26-27

The Brigham Young University School of Music will host two distinguished performers who are faculty members at California State University, Northridge in free solo recitals Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 26-27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. - Julia Heinen will present a clarinet recital ccompanied by Dmitry Rachmanov on the piano Wednesday, Sept. 26.To begin the performance, Heinen will perform “Premiere Rhapsody” by Claude Debussy followed by the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 128 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. After a brief intermission, she will perform “Tema con Variazioni” by Jean FranÁ§aix and the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Marc Eyechenne.As a soloist, Heinen has performed hundreds of concertos and recitals around the world including recent performances in El Salvador, the Czech Republic and Portugal. She has premiered and recorded several works written specifically for her and is recording a compact disc featuring six new works scheduled to be released in 2011 on the Parma Label.- Dmitry Rachmanov will perform a piano recital Thursday, Sept. 27.

BYU Student Solos in Salute to Youth

Brigham Young University music performance student Rebecca Pedersen was selected to solo for the second time with the Utah Symphony in the Salute to Youth concert this year. Pedersen will perform Puccini’s “Un bel di” from Madame Butterfly, with the orchestra on Tuesday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m.

“A Second Birth” opens BYU 2012-2013 theatre season

The world premiere of a new play by Ariel Mitchell, “A Second Birth,” will be staged at Brigham Young University Tuesday through Saturday, Sept. 25-28, in the Margetts Theatre. The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday’s performance will be a matinee at 2 p.m.

2012 Latino Cultural Event

Conference Center AuditoriumFriday — Saturday, October 26—27, 2012, 7:30 PM“Luz de las naciones — Sus promesas” is the theme of the upcoming Latino cultural event to be held in the Conference Center on Friday and Saturday, October 26—27, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. This production celebrates the coming of Jesus Christ to the New World and tells the legends of the great white god who visited the various civilizations in the Americas and on the isles of the sea. Included in the program is a dramatization of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. These stories are told through music, dance, and narration, including a 365-voice adult choir and a 130-voice children’s choir accompanied by musicians playing traditional instruments. The production will also feature actors and hundreds of dancers performing ancient and traditional Latin American, Polynesian, and Native American folk dances. There will be an art exhibit in the Conference Center lobby featuring unique artwork from the diverse cultures represented in the program.
