Conference Center AuditoriumFriday — Saturday, October 26—27, 2012, 7:30 PM“Luz de las naciones — Sus promesas” is the theme of the upcoming Latino cultural event to be held in the Conference Center on Friday and Saturday, October 26—27, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. This production celebrates the coming of Jesus Christ to the New World and tells the legends of the great white god who visited the various civilizations in the Americas and on the isles of the sea. Included in the program is a dramatization of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. These stories are told through music, dance, and narration, including a 365-voice adult choir and a 130-voice children’s choir accompanied by musicians playing traditional instruments. The production will also feature actors and hundreds of dancers performing ancient and traditional Latin American, Polynesian, and Native American folk dances. There will be an art exhibit in the Conference Center lobby featuring unique artwork from the diverse cultures represented in the program.

In one week, Sept. 21-27, top student performers from Brigham Young University's School of Music will showcase their skills during the annual showcase performances in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty artist Christian Smith will be performing a free bassoon concert Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

On the edge of the Brigham Young University campus is a sign inviting all to “Enter to Learn – Go Forth to Serve.” Every spring and summer for the past 50 years, a select number of students are given the opportunity to put that challenge to the test while performing around the globe, from quaint towns nestled in the Midwest to some of the world’s most exotic destinations.

Guest artists Ken Shifrin, former principal trombone with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Mike Hall, faculty at Old Dominion University, will present “The Golden Age of the Solo Baroque Trombone” at Brigham Young University Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The Brigham Young University Motion Picture Film Series will screen “Sabrina” Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium to begin its 14th season of archived film showings.

The following transcript is from a convocation speech for the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications. The speech was given by Sara Lee Gibb, a retired dance professor and former dean of the now discontinued College of Health and Human Performance.

The 8-Hands Ensemble, a percussion quartet featuring faculty from the Brigham Young University School of Music and other schools, will perform Friday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to this event is free.

The top ensembles from Brigham Young University's Department of Dance will present “eviDANCE” Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 12-15, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. There will also be a matinee Saturday at 2 p.m.

Earlier this year, Stephen M. Jones, dean of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, appointed Ed Adams as chair of the Department of Communications at Brigham Young University.

Bass player Artem Chirkov will present a Brigham Young University School of Music guest artist recital Friday, Sept. 14, at 313 University Parkway Center, Provo, at 6 p.m. The event is free. This event was previously scheduled to take place at 229 University Parkway Center at 7:30 p.m. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Chirkov was the first-prize winner at the 2010 Bradetich International Competition and at multiple international double bass competitions. He is the youngest principal double bass player in the history of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Accompanied by Jayne Galloway on the piano, Chirkov will perform the Sonata in h-Moll by J. M. Sperger, the Sonata 1963 by F. Proto, “Adagio” by D. Shostakovich, “Invocation” by M. Gajdos, “Prelude” by S. Rachmaninoff, the Fantasy on themes from “La Sonnambula” by G. Bottesini, “Elegia” by G. Bottesini and “Tarantella” by G. Bottesini.
