On the edge of the Brigham Young University campus is a sign inviting all to “Enter to Learn – Go Forth to Serve.” Every spring and summer for the past 50 years, a select number of students are given the opportunity to put that challenge to the test while performing around the globe, from quaint towns nestled in the Midwest to some of the world’s most exotic destinations.

The Brigham Young University Motion Picture Film Series will screen “Sabrina” Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium to begin its 14th season of archived film showings.

The following transcript is from a convocation speech for the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications. The speech was given by Sara Lee Gibb, a retired dance professor and former dean of the now discontinued College of Health and Human Performance.

The 8-Hands Ensemble, a percussion quartet featuring faculty from the Brigham Young University School of Music and other schools, will perform Friday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to this event is free.

The top ensembles from Brigham Young University's Department of Dance will present “eviDANCE” Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 12-15, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. There will also be a matinee Saturday at 2 p.m.

Earlier this year, Stephen M. Jones, dean of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, appointed Ed Adams as chair of the Department of Communications at Brigham Young University.

Bass player Artem Chirkov will present a Brigham Young University School of Music guest artist recital Friday, Sept. 14, at 313 University Parkway Center, Provo, at 6 p.m. The event is free. This event was previously scheduled to take place at 229 University Parkway Center at 7:30 p.m. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Chirkov was the first-prize winner at the 2010 Bradetich International Competition and at multiple international double bass competitions. He is the youngest principal double bass player in the history of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Accompanied by Jayne Galloway on the piano, Chirkov will perform the Sonata in h-Moll by J. M. Sperger, the Sonata 1963 by F. Proto, “Adagio” by D. Shostakovich, “Invocation” by M. Gajdos, “Prelude” by S. Rachmaninoff, the Fantasy on themes from “La Sonnambula” by G. Bottesini, “Elegia” by G. Bottesini and “Tarantella” by G. Bottesini. With the same great dancing groups, but with a different twist and a new name, the opening BYU dance show, Evidance, will amaze and inspire audiences September 12-17.

A limited number of spaces are available for free piano lessons for children ages six to 10 for fall semester. The lessons will be taught by seniors and graduate students who are piano performance majors in the BYU School of Music as part of a supervised teaching pedagogy course.

As part of Westminster College's 42nd annual Classical Greek Theatre Festival, Sophocles’ “Antigone” will be performed at Brigham Young University’s de Jong Concert Hall Monday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. A free pre-performance lecture will start at 4 p.m.

Theatre and Media Arts professor Megan S. Jones was honored at the 2012 Annual University Conference with the Alcuin Fellowship. The Alcuin Fellowship award recognizes teacher-scholars who have gone beyond the regular limits of their disciplines and made significant contributions to the general education and honors curriculum.
